Video and imaging design line has published a great article by Jim Bankoski, CTO of On2, on the techniques used in VP7. The article talks about golden frames, adaptibility to available bandwidth and low complexity to achieve optimum image quality. There’s a recent announcement from On2 that optimized version of their VP6 codec has been used in Sony Mylo device. I believe this is the first announced Flash Lite device using optimized On2 codec. As you know, Flash Lite almost entirely runs on native processor. Video is often CPU intensive, and in our experience, even a good CPU has choked running full screen video- especially at Mylo’s resolution at 800×480. My guess is that its gotta be more than 400MHz CPU, most likely ARM11 class. I have no idea how much RAM there is- but I bet its plenty. Older generation Mylo ran ARM9 from Freescale and Linux OS /QTopia. ......continue reading
