NEC has announced support for OpenVG 1.1 in its GA88 series IWAYG graphics IP. The supported applications include Flash Lite 3.1. The release says that about 5-10X increase in graphics performance is possible with the latest hardware. The GA88 series is targetted towards digital home appliances, car devices and digital signage systems.
I would be very interested in seeing a demo of this technology. The animation content, depending on what the user is trying to do, is known to take upto 100% CPU. So this type of IP would be extremely useful for people who are building devices using low end CPU and are looking to embed Flash Lite functionality. What is not known to me is if the IP will only work with NEC CPUs, and how the bill of material turns out when they use both CPU and the graphics IP. Also, it is not clear how low one can go in terms of CPU. Can this be used with 100MHz ARM9 class CPU for example?
Nevertheless, this is a step in right direction. Hardware support is what Flash Lite needs so one can get the best user experience on low end devices.
